It can already be challenging to acknowledge that a loved one needs assistance, but it can be even more difficult when you have to navigate through all the misconceptions about in-home care. From what home care involves and who provides it to how much it costs, there’s a lot of confusion surrounding this valuable service.
In order to clear some of the air, let’s take a closer look at some of the top in-home care myths.
Listen to the podcast episode here.
Myth #1: There are Fewer Opportunities for Socialization
Many family caregivers assume that facilities like assisted living homes and nursing homes provide a built-in community that will ensure their loved one gets to socialize as much as they’d like. But, as we’ve seen in recent years, this isn’t always the case. In such events as a health crisis, they, unfortunately, wouldn’t even be allowed to spend time with family members.
While in-home caregivers can provide companionship while at home, RetireEASE can also look for opportunities for your senior to connect with others and continue their favorite activities safely. As part of our individualized care plans, we work with you and your loved one to establish a strategy that helps them maintain or improve their quality of life – mentally, emotionally, and physically.
Myth #2: You Have to Invest in Full-Time Care
We’re here for you and your loved one. We work with you to establish the best schedule, amount of hours, and type of care your aging loved one needs to thrive. Because each person is unique, each care plan is unique! That means for one senior in our community we may assist with daily living activities every morning and evening, while another older adult may only request/require companionship two days a week.
Myth #3: You Can Handle it All
Don’t get us wrong, you’re wonderful and you’re doing an amazing job. In fact, during our assessment, we help you navigate and delegate within your current support system in a way that plays to each family member or friend’s strengths. Perhaps someone is available to take dad or grandma to doctor’s appointments and can sort medication. Another family member may be great at emotional support and morale, so they take them to their favorite restaurant. The list goes on.
Where handling caregiving yourselves becomes difficult is when the responsibilities fall upon just one or two people alone. This can quickly lead to burnout and, in worst case scenarios, resentment. Using our services helps take some of the weight off and gives you (and your loved ones) some much-needed relief.
It’s so important to dispel any misconceptions you or your loved ones may have about in-home caregiving, and the best way to do that is by speaking with a care coordinator to discuss what in-home care truly means and encompasses.
